Targeted Divestment and your MP PDF Print E-mail

In almost every divestment campaign your representative in Parliament can help by agreeing to support their local campaign and by supporting the national divestment movement more broadly by signing on to an Early Day Motion in support of divestment.

See Early Day Motion 1338, now expired, for which MPs have expressed public support for divestment in the past. SDUK is working to promote a new EDM on divestment. Sign up to our mailing list (email info@sudandivestment.org.uk) and we'll notify you when a new sign-on campaign has started.

In the meantime, write to your MP, expressing your support for the divestment campaign and your hope that they will do the same -- particularly in the MPs' own pension fund, the Parliamentary Contributory Pension Fund (PCPF). MEPs managed to divest the European Parliament's pension holdings from Petrochina; we should expect the same from our MPs.

In your letter, you may wish to include relevant facts about the situation in Darfur, such as the death of an estimated 200,000 people and the displacement of over two million. Additionally, the consequences of conflict are spilling over Chad and the Central Africa Republic, threatening stability in the region. For a fact sheet about Sudan divestment see our factsheet: Targeted Divestment at a Glance
